I was on the fence the first time I rented it--some parts of it are very good, and some parts I can't watch. The references and connections are very broad and esoteric, but not a bit foreign to the select audience this film is aimed at (ever played Go? that will make you nuts! black and white on black and white--a film in greytones dealing with black and white, good and evil, truth and illusion, finance and religion, science and art--there's too many levels here to even begin to discuss). The title itself is fair warning, and says more about what the movie is than any movie or book title I ever saw. Pi is hard logic gone amuck--the thin membrane between genious and madness--what state need you be in to pass effortlessly back and forth, without tearing the shield and bringing chaos into the "reason" of our civilization. I saw it again the other night, beaming off the satelite, and really got into it. Now I think I would put it on my "to buy" list. Yes, it's firmly in the cult film catagory. Definitely a mood piece--to be seen late at night--during the dreamtime. Falling asleep and waking again during this film only enhances it's effect."The truth of a thing is the feel of it, not the think of it."
--Stanley KubrickBy the way, his "system" reminds me of the film "Brazil". A tweakers nightmare.
