Has some one here, seen some of his work ? I just read a French review of his new film " Dolls " as being pure genius.....
Follow Ups:
I saw Dolls at the Rotterdam Film Festival and walked out after an hour. Really unbearable, with none of the attraction of his earlier works. Any reviewer calling this a masterwork needs meds, bad.
Taboo and Hanabi were pretty good.
I have seen all his work, I think his "That summer, the most tranquil sea" and "Hanabi"(Fireworks) are the ones I like best.He has started the work to re-do "Zatoichi"(yes! the blind swordsman) this year and is going to release in September. It will be interesting to see what his new rendition of Zatoichi is. But I was hoping that people leave Zatoichi alone, Katsu Shintaro is Zatoichi, much like Sean Connery is Mr.Bond.
Yep, he's a TV regular in Japan and I've seen every film he's made; quite an actor/director tho' he's no Mifune or Mizoguchi (yet) but really good at portraying dark, fatalistic and violent roles, 3 certain draws for Japanese filmgoers
He has a genius IQ apparently
Hopefully "Dolls" is a departure from that norm, I'm sure if he leaves his staid formula there is real brilliance waiting "Violent Cop" his film debut is quite a classic tho', Sonantine is a great yakuza flick as well
He's meant to be quite a wild character off screen too and almost died in a drunk driving crash on a 2-wheeler a few years back...

Well, he does not have much expression in most of his roles. In the accident he injured himself and half of his face lost control, and that has now added to his lack of expressions.
That is one that can not overact.....

I mentioned earlier that "Kikujiro" is the only Takeshi film without a body count; similar to Walter Salles' "Central Station."The TV game show "Takeshi's Castle" is now a cult hit in the U.S., shown on TNN as "Most Extreme Elimination Challenge" misdubbed in English, with Takeshi as cohost "Vic Romano".
Ive seen Sonatine and Brother. Sonatine is much better. Its cool because it shows gangster life like it really is. That is you spend most of your day killing time, hanging out, awaiting orders. You dont wear the best clothes and you gotta get your hands dirty. Brother was kind of too formulaic for me but still a picture worth watching.
