This recent samurai movie, "Tasogare Seibei", has won so many awards in Japan, and the reviews raved about it. The DVD with English subtitles is going to be released in Japan very soon. Anyone seen it yet? I have seen some good works by the director Yamada Yoji, apparently this is his first Samurai movie.
Follow Ups:
formulaic and dumb Damn shame as those films are full of character actors, but the recurring story of "old Boy who never gets the girl" the way he portrays it is just plain drivel, an idea no doubt culled from Luis Bunuels vastly superior "That Obscure Object of Desire"
Are you sure all these awards aren't just the incestuous Japanese film industry patting itself on the back?
He will have to do a helluva lot better than that with a Samurai drama, and I have my doubts, and, no, I haven't seen it
Sogo Ishii's GOJOE (2000) sets the benchmark for a rattling good Samurai yarn (tho' I conceed a very deep bow to Kurosawas "Shichinin no Samurai") I've included a link to a review of GOJOE, unfortunately it seems the foreign release will lose 40 minutes of film...Eric
Miike over there these days?
was the last film of his I've seen (the shame!)
I guess I'll be getting a TV tan soon to catch up...
I've attached a link to a great interview with him

I agree, I haven't quite finished as type size is quite small, but I will finish soon...thanks again...
I don't know how many Tora-san he made, must be over forty of them since the first one in 1970 or so. The very early ones were well made, but I never watched any other ones. His work that I remember well are old ones like "Home" and "Yellow Hankerchief".It was said that Kurozawa had wanted to produce Tasogare Seibei but never did. It is supposed to be centered around a love story.
