Thought it had knockout production values. Found it a bit looong, but very enjoyable. Would be interesting to know what foundation in history it has, if any . . .
Follow Ups:
All the characters are true historical figures, and the story outline basically followed and traced the historical facts. Naturally the director injected his own visions, but there were less exaggerations compared to Zhang Yi-Mou's "Hero", which is a story about the assassination of the same emporer.
This isn't due for cinematic release here until later in the year so I have only seen Hero on an R3 DVD.A very good, concise storyline using a similar plot device to Rashomon.
Great acting from all the principals especially Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung. The 2.40:1 anamorphic DVD with full bitrate DTS ES is a visual and sonic knockout.
Well worth seeking out.
