Well, CBS's Nazi Fest is over. Carlyle was stunning as Dolph. He appeared totally immersed in the role. (I would hate to think he might be a method actor--being around him would have been a bitch.)After seeing his portrayl, I began to wonder if the real Dolph was that maniacal and borderline out-of-control? Another words, if Carlyle's character came down the street, one would look at him and say: "there's something wrong with that guy!" He would give most people a caution, I believe.
CBS.com has devoted quite a few pages to the program and it is certainly worth checking out.
Follow Ups:
a real diary covering the early years of Nazi Germany and Herr Hitler's deceptions and ravings. Written by a young reporter who worked for and was a protege of Edward R. Murrow by the name of William Shirer. This was the author of the later, Pulitzer-winning "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich", which should also be read by anyone interested in the history of the period. Shirer worked the Berlin beat in the late 30s and his diary, which he had to hide from the Gestapo, is quite revealing - about Hitler and his criminal henchmen, but also about the ease of which he fooled those who should have known better such as Neville Chamberlin and Charles Lindbergh.Hitler's legacy as one of history's greatest monsters was written in the blood of 6 million Jews, 500,000 Catholics, 300,000 Gypsies, 1 million Ukranians, 600,000 Poles, and the millions of his other victims. What his armies did in Leningrad/St. Petersburg alone was enough to earn Hitler his black marks. He's a honcho in the cesspool of tyranny and his name will forever be a curse.
turned it off after the first 30 minutes. I was bored to tears. I don't know that anyone knew him well enough to write a decent biography, let alone dramatize him as other than a two-dimensional caricature. It is much easier and more comforting to imagine him as some sort of grotesque monster than as twisted human being.
Then we can keep a more comfortable distance between him and ourselves.
I took for the hills after some 5 minutes.
Actually, I fell asleep after 10 minutes, then woke up at the first commercial.Getting the message that my unconscious subconscious was sending me, I turned the TV off.
Der Spiegel did write " US ( ! ) soap opera with almost no historical truth....
it's time trying to forget or cover it up . . .
That's entirely inaccurate.
Well, not so....In Schoolboys still have nothing in their history book ( or not much ) on the third Reich.
But most Americans forget that Adolf E. Neuman was actually an Austrian citizen...
Austria has STILL NOT worked out his past.
There, I am certain, you will find the hardcore nazis...
For you !
Der Spiegel is one of the most vehement voice for saying it all. And not only for Germany.
You really should look to Austria.

Having read a couple of biographies about the "real Dolph", and a couple more of those that were in his inner circle, he was in a class of his own when it came to paranoid delusions and megalomania; not helped at all by the fact he was able to live and act them out(!) He shared with Napoleon and Stalin a penchant for pacing up and down, and brooding
I've seen many attempts by actors to convey the right balance of angst, attitude and mannerisms and they've all missed by miles
Any CIC that screams down the 'phone to one of his Generals "Is Paris burning?" ain't exactly normal...
Treading that fine line between what an audience in 2003 will accept as a credible portrayal, based on what was clearly an "unbelievable" and larger-than-life individual, I would rate as nigh impossible
If Carlyle has succeeded in this metamorphosis where others have failed, that's a coup in itself; if you are wondering "was AH really that maniacal?" Carlyle has probably done so; I've no doubt AH was a total monster Let's hope Carlyle doesn't get it into his head to annex Poland...

Try to catch it on the rerun circuit. It is worth seeing. One other thing, the series only gave a brief shot at trying to show where his rabid Jew-hatred came from. From what I understand about history, no one can really pin that down . . .
had historically been very much a part of the European landscape centuries before the appearance of Herr Hitler; he used the myth of "the International Jewish Conspiracy" as well as Anti-Communist sentiment as the backbone of Mein Kampf (My Struggle), a book that went into many translations and printings, and established AH as both a respected international writer and made him a small fortune at the same time. This "struggle" was exactly what a Depression-weary Public wanted to hear; it also provided exactly the springboard of finance and popular support AH needed at exactly the right time
Having established himself as both the focus and standard bearer of the Brave New Reich, AH was simply scapegoating Jews, Communists Gypsies Slavs, and other "undesirables" to suit his own political ends
I doubt there was ever anything personal in it, he was just milking European xenophobia for all it was worth
