If you like Audrey Tautou (Amelie) then don't go... she doesn't shine there. Go see it if you like Judith Godrèche... as she is good.Otherwise... you could spend two long hours much worse. Some very entertaining moments... an amuzing film that will leave you feeling good and hungry... not much substance and no clear point of aim, but hey, it ain't Good Will Hunting... that's for sure!

it brought to mind Whit Stillman's Barcelona, another group of young people abroad in this same colorful town. In Barcelona, the characters are much more important and the dialogue is sparkling. By comparison, one does not get to know much about the characters in L'Auberge Espagnole, except the main guy. But it is a nice breezy, warm-hearted entertainment, in which this diverse group come together to divert a minor crisis...and I really enjoyed it far more than the Matrix Reloaded. It was a relief in comparison.
Go to the search engine..I post quite awhile ago on it...
Like you said; nothing terribly deep but you could do a lot worse for your entertainment dollar.I agree with what you said about the actresses.
If the portrayal of the bar/night life is accurate, it does make Spain/Barcelona look like a fun place to visit.
...the film is by Cédric Klapisch, who brought us the truly unforgettable "Un air de famille" - one of my all-time favorite films. Both names deserve the serious consideration.
