Certainly one of his most complex ! Ambiguity is omni present on this one, and it was his most loved child....
Follow Ups:
IMO, it's one of his best. I've been a Hitch fan for many years, but had not seen Shadow until about a year ago. My favorites are: Suspicion (yes, really!), Notorious, Rope, Rear Window, and Vertigo. Now that I've seen Shadow, I've added it to my list of favorites. It was also Hitch's personal favorite. It's a shame we don't have a remastered DVD w/ some extras.
We do have a shadon of the doubt on DVD ! It is his most twisted film. Rope is an weak one in my eyes. Young and innocent is wonderful !
Patrick, I have the DVD, too. I meant that it would be nice if they cleaned up the print & gave us a remastered version. The picture quality on the existing one is pretty bad. What is "Young and innocent"?
My " Shadow " on Universal is half that bad ! Quite good in fact.
Young and innocent is the only optimistic Hitch with maybe Mr & Mrs Smith, who was not good, it belong to his " English " period.
An absolute MUST.
Pure concentrated Hitch, with all his symbolics, and....Young & Innocent.
My Universal Shadow DVD looks so so. I probably would think it's better if I didn't have Criterion's Rebecca or (not quite as good) Notorious for comparison. Those restorations were awesome. Still, the picture on Shadow is not as bad as Strangers on a Train. I was really disappointed w/ the image on that DVD. Thanks for recommending Y&I. I'll put it on my list
