One of my alltime favorite movies is "The Third Man". I have it on a Criterion Laser Disc version but I was browsing through Borders' and saw a bin full of cheap DVD's - about 7 or 8 dollars each I think. Yep, I saw a copy of The Third Man and bought it. Bad bad move. When I got it home and played it, the starting credits during the zither music were off center and the sound was jumpy and scratchy. The movie picture quality was terrible. I've seen cheapo VHS tapes better than that DVD.So I returned it for a refund. I told the cashier I rarely return anything but I did this time because it was such a bad copy of a great film.
However, not all Criterion titles are well done. Avoid the Criterion version Fritz Lang's "M" and shoot for the PAL version restored by the FW Murnau Foundation coming out from Eureka Home Video (UK).Cheers,
