Hi,
I have a small collection of Juzo itami films on dvd and Laserdisk.
I think his photography and storylines are very original.I have seen more fims by Juzo but am unable to get any here in the uk,
Titles like Supermarket woman etc.I tryed Ebay but only Tampopo,A taxing woman 1,2 and the Funeral seem to be for sale?
Any thoughts,Greatly apreshiated.
Follow Ups:
Ian,I have seen Tampopo a couple of times and is one of my favourite (non-Kurosawa) Japanese movies- and along with "Babbette's Feast" one of my favourite "food" movies. Tampopo is a wonderful combination of Samurai, Clint Eastwood "mysterious stranger parody, and Kung Fu Kid. Not only is it funny and great comment on film, it is so refreshingly upbeat, yet not sentimental.
This was just a wonderful look at the idea of the importnace of self-image, teamwork, and striving for improvement in art.
Memorable: The scene in which the homeless people are comparing vintage wines that they found at the bottom of bottles out behind expensive restaurants? The young Japanese ladies learning how to eat spaghetti? The gangster and girlfriend passing the raw egg? The young executive that does not deferentially order the same French meal as the Big Boss, but is the more informed connoissseur? The "noodle order memorization" scene?
Fantastic!
Cheers,
I have rented it 3 times over the years and it led me to The Funeral, which did not come close, and Taxing Woman--which I just didn't appreciate. (Maybe I should give them another shot.)
Hi Bambi,
Thanks for the post,
A brilliant description.I also think that Tampopo is a work of sheer genious.
The one thing i like about Juzo itamis films is you can follow the movies plots and caracters with ease. The plots are not to heavy and there is always a unique perspective on life in and around Tokyo.
A taxing woman is my all time favourite film and i bought it on Laserdisk and dvd.The tax inspector and her never ending energy in capturing the elusive tax cheat was and still is a journey into a never ending world of film creativity.
Every time i watch Tampopo i get drawn in to all the different characters,Not to mention a raging hunger for noodles.???
I only saw the Tampopo, and it was wonderful. Getting them here is hard, but I will probably try to get a couple.Another film in that vein is Irezumi - mesmerizing.
Hi Victor,
Thanks for the post.I also enjoyed Tampopo,Very unique and original.I always end up feeling hungry watching this film.
A taxing woman is also very good and its sequel aswell.
Thanks for the link to the film,I will check this out.
Add a couple more to the list: Marutai no Onna (1997) which deals with a witness to cult killings, and Daibyoo-nin, (1993) "The Terminal Patient" which is a sympathetic portrait of a dying man
Itami Juzo died allegedly by suicide, but there are many that say he was thrown off a building and was actually murdered
He showed the moral decay and crime of comtemporary Japan a little too well perhaps, and made enemies as a result, he was very brave to take on those themes(!)
You'll have a hard job finding Japanese films in UK format, there are a lot more in USA NHTSC and Amazon.com and Ebay are your best bet
I can't help from Japan as VHS or Laser Disc isn't dubbed or subtitled for local films
Eric
Tokyo
Hi Eric,
Thanks for the post.
Great imfo,I also heard that Juzo had saddly passed away due to unusual circumstances.I really admired his photopgraphy in a taxing woman which i think is a timeless masterpeice.
I bought the soundtrack to the film on cd which has remixes on it,A real find.
Do you have many Juzo films?.
I have taxing woman 2 on vhs(ntsc),also Tampopo on dvd and mimbo no onna taped from the tv.Also the funeral on dvd.
The dvd pressing of Tampopo is far superior to the laserdisk as it has proper widescreen. Thanks for the imfo Eric,Your English is very good.
Tokyo is my favourite city,I have never been but i always wanted to see Mt Fuji and its sunrise from the summit. The other Juzo films you mentioned sound intresting Eric,Its a shame they dont release them on dvd or something.
I have seen some of the Juzo itami films caracters in other films but i cannot remember the titles.
I also have Sonatine starring Takeshi,
