and, no, I don't mean "Gone with the Wind"
Edward Zwicks "Glory" has a soaring soundtrack and Denzel Washington won an academy award for his role; but still no cigar
Seems there were more than enough characters and events to tap a rich vein for filmmakers; is there any film with a Civil war theme you'd recommend? (What am I missing? I've seen "Gettysburg" and wasn't impressed with that much either)

Follow Ups:
"The Red Badge of Courage" starring Audie Murphy. A gritty, realistic look at the Civil War with fine acting all around.
Several good Civil War-era dramas besiders "Glory"; Wyler's "Friendly Persuasion" (my fav), "Raintree County" (semi-potboiler), "Shenendoah", "Dark Command" (more of a cowboy movie). That "Gettyburg" is best produced and historically (though plodding as a story) CW movie says a lot about American perceptions. Perhaps, like WWII, the subject is just too broad and complex for Hollywood to translate well except in snippets. There are lots of good documentaries available, with Burns' PBS series easily at the top.
