I just saw this ageless wonder for the first time this weekend and I was devastated by the quiet power of Rene Clement's classic. It's hard to praise perfection without sounding trite, redundant, or gushing---so I'll be brief. See it. From the opening scene to the last shot you will be captivated, and the images will return again and again days later.
Follow Ups:
I have been heavily promoting this marvel as one of my favorite anti-war films for many years, giving it to every friend of mine as the mandatory viewing.Ironically, owning the tape, I never wanted to see it again... superstition, perhaps? I simply cherish its memory.
Also ironically, the beautiful and poignant Brigitte Fossey had not done any other significant work since then.
because I feel that way with much powerful art. I know that a point will come when I don't care to experience it again---it will have lost its power to affect me because of familiarity---and I resist that.
