Sounds like someone simply kept his collective head burried in the sand.I mean, Breaking the Waves is an OK movie with a good acress trying to do her best, but cut me a major break. Best film of the 90's?
Quite a step down from the '80's poll winners: "Raging Bull" and "Wings Of Desire". Well you'll be happy to know that Spielberg had only one film on the List ("Schindler's", tied for #30) and "Titanic" was on NOBODY's lists (that's zero out of 155 ballots, it did worse than Steve Forbes). Of the '90's Best Picture Oscar winners, only "Unforgiven" (tied for #8), "Schindler's List", and "Silence of the Lambs" (tied for #65) made the list. The good thing about the list is that there are a lot of films on it that I've never seen, e.g., several by Taiwan's Hou Hsiao-hsien (remember the SF film festival post about his work?) including "Flowers of Shanghai" (#6), and Todd Haynes "Safe" (tied for #3).
You are right, there is some justice out there and the silver lining... However, beware, Leonardo never sleeps...My mind is so busy with many things that I would appreciate your throwing together a competing list - would you mind doing this (I am not too good with dates - you are far better organized)? I know I would recognize many on that list, so I would like to relive it if possible. Once we get it rolling, I am sure I will be able to break my mental block. Sound like fun?
Victor, I haven't forgotten my homework, but I had to finish a research manuscript and judge at a high school science fair. My video copy of "Forbidden Games" arrived, so I'll thank you ahead for the recommendation.
