If you watch a video copy of Dune - especially pan and scan - it fails miserably as science fiction. But it succeeds brilliantly as a comedy!"The tooth... the tooth..." (and nothing but the tooth?)
... the plot's integrity was left on the editor's cuttingroom floor, which I suspect was the demise of Mission Impossible too. I kept waiting for Director's Cuts for continuity but to no avail. These films aren't w/o potential nor vision, just poor execution.
Actually I do like Dune, especially after seeing it on DVD, which plays out better than I remember it in the theater - probably the small screen speeds up the pacing.Dune was supposed to be written and directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky, who did El Topo (now THAT'S a kinky film - and truly unforgettable!). He has a singularly pecular vision that IMO would have made for a spectacular film, but he was fired by Dino DeLaurentis and David Lynch was hired to replace him.
All things considered, Lynch did a pretty good job condensing the massive novel into a 2 hour movie - with about 7-1/2 hours left on the cutting room floor.
I'd probably rather sit through the 1st 5hour some odd version, than endure the endless 2hour version again. my $.02 anyway.
