Anybody see this French movie? An interesting premise, a la Memnto, of starting at the end and going back to the beginning. This has got to be one of the most brutal and graphic movies I have seen. I have a pretty strong stomach, but as I was sitting on my couch in the dark with the wife out of town, I was squirming and wondering if the rage in the first half of the movie would let up.
A bit of a SPOILER here for those of you who haven't seen it and might - it has, IMO, one of the most gut-wrenching rape scenes ever. The camera just looks on as Monica Belluci, who is in fine form here, is raped for what seems like forever. It was a real test to see if I was going to make it just sitting watching this brutality. And there's another even more horrific scene before this.
Having said all this, I would probably see it again just for the honesty of its portrayal - a movie that doesn't hold back, doesn't gussy things up to make it more palatable for the audience.
Follow Ups:
Pointless is a polite word for this study of mindless violence and dizzying camera work. The movie had no developed plot, no developed characters, nothing but violence. And, unfortunately, transitioned into Queer Cinema.A poorly concieved Memento with prurient shock value.
I can see where you are coming from in your reaction, but the movie isn't meant to be conventional, nor is it meant to be a "Memento" copy. The storyline is pretty simple (rape and revenge)and "developed" to be conventional about it. You are right about it being about shock value. As I said in my original post, I appreciated the fact that it didn't hide behind any facades in its presentation of the rape, the anger, and the animalistic rage. By going in reverse, it actually worked better because it makes the audience wonder as to the mystery of the reason for such rage. The sheer brutality of the murder is that much more understandable in light of the revelation near the end of the movie.I have since learned that the movie's 12 segments were shot in single takes, which makes me appreciate Belluci's performance in the rape scene that much more. Was a 10 minute rape scene really necessary? Perhaps not. But, as horrific as rape is, I don't think I'd ever quite felt this gutted watching the victim.
In the end, I am not sure if the movie really worked or not, but it's a movie that has stayed with me.
The rape mentioned in "Irreversible", the beating by the village women in "Malena", and most horrifying of all, she has had to kiss Keanu Reeves twice ("Matrix Reloaded" and "Bram Stoker's Dracula").
wore in Matrix II made her ass look as big as John Candy's.
if that's the correct title of the Bruce Willis-conqueors-Africa flick. Guess all those Eye-talian women are a mama-mias just waiting to burst out.
all hot and sweaty...or is that a good thing?

White Spandex will not be worn before, during, or after Memorial Day.
Monica Belluci can wear anything (or not) she damn well pleases.
It was one of the big Cannes Festival last year, the press did not like is violence...I did not see it...why should I ?
Sounds like the same concept, we see the ending first and go back through the event's beginning, as the film progresses.I have the DVD, but I didn't think that Memento was a remake.
Neither is a remake. Irreversible came out in 2001, I think. Even though the concept is the same, they really are two very different movies. One is just more gruesome, perhaps even unwatchable to some, than the other.
and the 'a la' part didn't get the synapses firing in the right order. Thanks for the tip.
