In Reply to: Anyone seen the "outtakes" on the new Monterey Pop disc? posted by Duilawyer on September 12, 2003 at 20:47:33:
i also hesitated at buying the monterey pop festival set because of the hefty price, but man oh man, it is really good. some of the music feels dated, but the good stuff is damn excellent.the outtakes are as good as the stuff in the film. in the outakes, the byrds footage is my favorite. the hendrix concert is my favorite overall - you see a guy on the cusp of making it huge, but he's still got to work it to wow the audience. young, hungry and fresh. there's a certain positive energy in the hendrix perforamnces and throughout the entire monterey festival that is missing from the woodstock and altamont festival films. i don't know how to say it any better, but all the footage, including the outtakes, really gives me a feel-good, positive vibe. the only thing is that you'll wish it had more footage of all these bands because, other than hendrix and otis, you only get one or two songs by each act.
you can find it for cheaper than $70 if you dig around, or rent the discs through netflix. is it worth the price? i can only say that i rented the discs from netflix and wound up buying the set because i wanted to see a lot of the performances again.
Follow Ups:
I'll try Blockbuster to see if it can be rented. Netflix; the turnaround was too slow after 9/11.
