Follow Ups:
BTW, Demon With the Glass Hand is some of Harlan's best TV writing from that period, IMO.
Yes, I knew you'd enjoy the awards, as I recall you said a while
back that you had the first season DVD. Agree with you on Ellison's
writing. There is a short story he wrote about a super-malevolant
computer, which is awesome, read it a couple of years ago in a fiction
book on machine intelligence. Super-cynical piece, can't recall the
name of it right off, but will let you know what it is when I find
out. Best,AH.
Found that Ellison short-story - entitled, "I Have No Mouth, And I
Must Scream"-1967; reprinted in "Machines That Think: The Best
Science Fiction Stories About Robots & Computers"-1983, Eds. -
Asimov,Warrick & Greenberg.
Also recommend a non-fiction book, "Asimov's Galaxy: Reflections
On Science Fiction"-1989,Doubleday, by Isaac Asimov. Contains 66
editorial essays by himself reprinted from his "Isaac Asimov's
Science Fiction Magazine". Highly informative and entertaining
if you're into that sort of reading.IMO, DWAGH was the best episode of the entire OOLs series, years
after the series cancellation, DWAGH won an award at the Trieste
Film Festival. Ellison's script won the Writer's Guild Award for
Outstanding Script in the category of Television Anthology for the
1964-65 season.
What makes the episode work so well are Ellison's ingenious script,
Robert Culp's outstanding performance, Byron Haskin's excellent
direction, and the well-chosen setting (recommended by Assistant
Director Robert Justman) of The Bradbury Building in Los Angeles
(Ellison said he came to think of TBB as a character in his
script).
TBB was not named after sci-fi-fantasy writer Ray Bradbury*, rather
after mining-real-estate tycoon, Lewis Bradbury, who commissioned
its building in 1892. (*Although he did call night after episode's
broadcast with his compliments.)
A special note on Robert Culp: Culp starred in more episodes(3)than
any other leading actor in the series. Although his best performance
was in DWAGH, he also gave first-rate performances in The Architects
of Fear and Corpus Earthling. Haskin said Culp's middle name should
have been "Outer Limits". Culp's character, Trent, was tailor-made
for him, as Ellison thought he was "hot". Culp stated that Ellison
showed up at first nights shooting and loudly exclaimed that he'd
written the script for him. Culp and Ellison became friends at
first meeting and have remained close ever since. - AH
