they had developed a relationship, sex would have destroyed it.
His involvement was emotional, even a bit paternal. But to hop in the sack would have changed it completely. He said he loved her, that she would find someone who would love her and care for her; I would add an additional sentence, but the guy in the movie wouldn't I suspect.
