and thinking, specifically, that I didn't know what to think about it. I was thinking about it *through* my feelings about Dancer in the Dark, and about von Trier in general. He's too manipulative to fully respect; one has to remain wary of his intentions.I thought the performances in The Idiots were pretty well-done, from what I remember. The thrust of the story had a more responsible morality behind it, in the long run, than, say, Dancer in the Dark or Breaking the Waves. There was one scene in particular, when two of the characters approached one another in 'idiot' mode to be able to relate one another, touch each other, kiss...and then, if I recall correctly, they sort of break down in one another's arms, allowing themselves to move outside of 'idiot' mode. I thought that was genuinely effective, and felt less deliberate than similar moves in other von Trier films.
It's not the most visually stunning film I've ever seen, needless to say.
I'm having trouble remembering the specifics. What did you think of it?
.
I am not a great fan of Lars at all.Zentropa was good, Breaking the Waves was less so, and the Dancer I thought was simply horrible.
After seeing the Idiots I had to do some reading on it, but basically I don't like it. I dislike the documentary-style jittery camera - it was probably interesting when it first was done decades ago, but enough of that already!
I simply can't relate to the people in that film, sorry, and the directing was I thought something I have seen many times before.
The hard core porn scenes did irritate my wife somewhat - and she is not some silly prude, mind you - as we thought they were gratuitous.
