John Ford is one of the best director ever. Snob could consider his " cowboy " work as minor...In France we never did, and rightly so!
His films are in the same vein as John Huston, different of course, but parent.
" The lost patrol " is not a very good film but it has on board Victor...Mac Laglen ( the Fordīseargent ) Boris Karloff and the music of the romantic Steiner.
This film is claustrophobic, it has nothing to envy to J.P.Sartre theater play! Very critical of the English upper class in form of the officers depict as living in a world long gone.
The interplay relations of the soldiers shows the real life one but in a microcosmos world.
Pessimistic, dark, one would dare to say, anti-American. At the antipode of today modern idiotic self elect but fake optimism.
A film who bear some spirit with " Passion in the Desert ".
Do not ask me why. And not only for the sand.
A film to see.
Follow Ups:
Great film. The only problem. . .I've never seen the whole thing! Most available prints, the ones we've seen on TV, were an abbreviated 67 min cut (or thereabouts). Originally the film was a bit longer. Hopefully, it will be resurrected on DVD to its original length.
I have an French VHS with 74min..the picture quality is horrible, but the film put you under his spell...
