to sit through it. Ok. It wasn't THAT bad. But it IS predicatable in the extreme. And Clooney just seems ill-fitted to the big screen: he's too slow to react, too mannered. On a tv, that's fine, the image is small. But when someone's fifty -feet tall, it becomes a caricature. He also generates zero magnetism with Catherine Z (according to my wife, as well).
The Coen-heads have been in a holding pattern lately; "Fargo," and "The Big Lebowski" (which I should have included in my cult list, BTW) set high standards which they've undershot since.
Hi Tin,
The Coen brothers stumbled into a gold mine when they had Clooney imitate Clark Gable in O Brother... I loved it, as did millions of other people. I thought Cruelty was an absolute hoot, I think Clooney's acting was just fine, and like a number of reviewers.....I think we will be seeing a series of movies with them paired as long as that chemistry keeps working. Sorry you didn't like it, but to tell you truth, I like the Coen's new approach better. The
quirky strangeness of their early efforts is gone, and what you have with O Brother and IC is good old fashioned movie making. I love it.
Dont know how it can miss with the Coen Bros steering it; I loved Billy Bob Thornton in Slingblade and Geoffrey Rush in Shine, dont know about the main characters but its on my watch list
Eric
