All the critics--it's my own fault for reading them, I guess--keep rehashing details I think would be better left to the filmgoer to discover. I'm excited about the movie, but unless I can do something to forget what I've learned, I feel like I'm already going to be anticipating the crucial plot turns. The reason I've been so curious to read the reviews is because they've been so universally glowing, I've been almost looking forward to a criticism or three. But so far, nothing. I can't remember a film in the last decade that's been so well-regarded by so many.
Follow Ups:
tawdry, contrived and depressing and while Sean Penn may win an Oscar, he went over the top for me...Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon are fine though, as are all the supporting cast. The atmosphere and pacing are excellent. It is a very professionally told story, but the story itself and its resolution seem quite arbitrary...I have no inclination to ever see it again, while I may well see Kill Bill again soon.
that MR has the same percentage of positive reviews as Matchstick Men and 5% less than Freaky Friday, 12% less than Lost In Translation, 12% less than American Splendor, 16% less than Finding Nemo, etc, etc. In fact for current flicks it's barely upper midddle of the road in terms of positive reviews (which after seeing it seems just about right).
Especially since a sizable portion of the "critics" comprising RT's rating are not critics at all - just bozos with a website.I'm with Clark on this. I didn't read reviews of Mystic River, went to see it, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Gotcha! You must cease to read reviews. Clip 'em, like I do.
