Great film. As you may be aware it was shelved by the Soviet thought police for almost 20 years.
My experience was contrary to Victor's, actually. I think it's a very good film.
It is quite graphic in spots; and historically accurate. You'll be one step closer to understanding how and why the Empire fell apart.
The portrayal on Nicholas II by actor Romashin alone is worth it.
Not to mention Petrenko's Rasputin...I think we [briefly] discussed it here.
on Amazon.com, but so are dreadful films like Ishtar... I might have my arm twisted here and can see a viewing of this in my future,

I saw it and I didn't like it one bit. It was too heavy-handed and pretentious, I thought. I watched it looking forward to its end. Petrenko was good, but the whole film revolting. I felt similar emotiong watching "Idi I Smotri". I can't quite put my finger on what it is, but both films made me want to stop watching them - something dehumanizing perhaps. In that regard the impression was aking to that from Sokurov's later works. Both directors make you feel like you have just swallowed a worm.Klimov's earlier works were very weak. The "Adventures of a Dentist" was simply ridiculously weak, and his much heralded "Dobro pozhalovat, ili postoronnim vkhod vospreshchyon" was not much better either.
as it seems to be very favorably reviewed on the Net also
