It was a scary-ass film. Alien is to movies what Led Zepplin is to music. The movie spawned an evolving genre of scifi and horror films that will continue on . . .
Each passing year we become more jaded in our viewing experiences and movies lose their relevance. Ie., Chainsaw Massacre is now laughable, MASH is barely tolerable, etc. To that tune Alien may not impress you--just as Matrix 3 probably won't either.
I guess you've got a problem with Ridley's "Legend", huh?

It's all about context.
It's like arguing with a kid that thinks Citizen Kane is crap because he is (unknowingly) comparing it to all the movies that used it as a stepping stone.
