By Doctor Zhivago Syndrome I mean that when Pasternak's novel came out in Italy in the late 50s, I believe, there were demonstrations of people holding posters and generally maligning the book. But noone had read it. It was banned. So I was hinting to that. We all have a little prejudice in us.
I liked the 1st Matrix. It was excellent and dynamic. And a pretty good sci-fi flick too.

At any rate, it is completely incorrect to suggest that one must watch the whole movie to know what it is.
I think you're relying on commercial snippets. You'd never rent it.:)
Anyhow, Matrix 1 is not a bad film.
Perhaps better than not bad.
What I saw bored me to death.I can and have watched many bad films - I am good at finding fun elements in many of them. That one was such a nothing I simply forgot and moved on.
I will take the Commando any day over it. Or any (OK, almost any) of Stalone or Bronson films.
BTW - I can't recall the instance when the commercial clips provided a wrong impression. Maybe there ARE such cases, but I can't recall any.
