The first one was the Dangerous Female on AMC. aka The Maltese Falcon of 1931 - the first movie based on that book. The Houston/Bogart version is universally considered far superior.... I don't know if the word "far" is right here. This one I thought offered plenty of good entertainment, actually, so I would not be so quick to dismiss it. Had some moments that were simply great. Bebe Daniels alone was worth the price of admisison.
Take a look if you have a chance.
The second one - Band of Outsiders (Bande à part), Godard's 1964 film about three inept robbers-to-be.
Not much there that needs to be said about this film - it is one of the great works of cinema art. Anna Karina steals it, of course, with her dance scene simply intoxicating.
So there is plenty of good life on television - you just don't want to give in to the sense of despair.
It seems like I can easily catch three or four good films each week. Not too bad at all, considering the general state of decline.

Does this favorite cable channel present films in their original aspect ratios?
The channels are of course just the standard 4:3, but there is ofter the letterbox which doesn't really mean it is the original ratio. That is why watching the Clockwork Orange in HDTV was so ejnoyable - it was of course in wide screen... not sure the true original or not, but of course closer to it.
I suspect Band of Outsiders was shot in 4:3... but will check into that.
A friend and I were talking about that first Maltese Falcon version recently and couldn't remember the name. Thanks.I've been able to catch up on some things I taped and have seen L.I.E., The Grey Zone, Brother (Brat), Kiss of Death, the 1931 Spanish version of Dracula, The 47 Ronin, and Road House. I just finished watching An Honest Dealer and recommend it. I understand that Philippe Noiret came out of retirement to be in that one.
