"How many movies can you name that actually changed the way the "genre" movies are made forever (sci fi action genre in this case)"This could certainly apply to the first movie, but the second and third broke no new ground, and are simply (poor) imitators. One way they could have broken new ground was by having believable, three dimensional, complex characters (in an anime-style movie) that actually made you care what happened to them. Easily drawn archetypes have their place, but not for three movies in a row.
