Man, I can't even count. One of those movies that when you're flipping channels you stop on it till the end, even if it's 5 minutes away.
Follow Ups:
... How was Tim Robbin's character able to successfully conceal a man-sized hole in his cell wall for nearly 20 years simply by taping a flimsy paper movie poster over it . Never mind for the moment that he seriously expected to stay in this same cell for 20 years. He was in solitary for over a month near the end, for chrissake! No one used his cell? And none of the guards ever searched it in 20 years?OK, maybe I'm taking the movie too literally. And there is no little satisfaction in seeing the warden get his in the end. But even though the script is purposely overwrought "pulp fiction" and there are many grossly unrealistic events portrayed in the movie, I still, for some reason, can't get past this particular "hole" in the plot. I'll have to watch more closely next time - maybe it's one of those trick endings (like in "Brazil") where the last few minutes slip into a dream sequence and the guy really did hang himself...
I can't count that high!! This is a movie that I resisted seeing. People kept on saying how great it was.. My reaction was blah blah blah...One day I was at my parents house (they were not in) and I popped in the VHS tape.. Lated that day I had the DVD (and watched it again).
I love that movie and it is definitely one of my favorite.
When are they going to do the super special edition treatment on this classic???
That escape scene where Andy emerges from the sewer pipe during the rainstorm, hands outstretched towards the heavens...I can't think of a more memorable moment in a recent film (say, last 15 years or so).Bought the DVD, too.

I love this film..particulary the rape scene..from the sisters...
:-)
This one holds the record for the "most often rented" by a wide margin. Like you, I can never resist. I've seen it many times.
