I was born in Russia, came here in 1979."Mother Russia" is the old fashioned term, it is rather archaic in its sound... it something Pushkin and Tolstoy would use. It was not used much at all during the Soviet era, as Russia was just one of the many republics. So more commonly you would see the term "Motherland", usually depicted as a sad looking older woman, often grieving over the body of her dead son.
There days Mother Russia is riding again, naturally... it has strong nationalistic flavor and it has been soiled over the centuries of use - the anti-semitic porgoms were often conducted under that slogan.

Yet, the (youngish) Russians I met in East Europe had a definite idea of Mother Russia, all giving differing answers. Some said it referred to the land and wide expanse, others had different (and warm) associations.
Too, if Motherland has replaced it, what image(s) are associated with that term?

Many other things too, but as I said, archaic.
BTW - don't know how young those people are, but the current under-30 generation is likely going to be the most "lost" generation in the Russian history. It is sad situation.

I think it IS important, but central? Perhaps not quite.
