At the time the movie was being made, her casting caused plenty of contraversy. Everybody was waiving the book, trying to prove she was nor right for the role.But I think she is fine, with minor faults perhaps. If you recall when she first enters, she runs in like a classical ballerina that she was, not like a country nobility girl, but that is a minor fault I think.
A far stronger contraversy was Bondarchuk playing Pierre - way too old, some would say, but somehow I got used to him and he doesn't bother me anymore. I think his performance is in line with the book's spirit.
Another one was his wife - Skobtseva. But her role is so minor it hardly matters.
But hardly anyone ever argued with the selection of Tikhonov for Andrei. The man had the right "stuff" to play that role, and the film is to large degree his.
I would be quite curious to know your reaction to Vladislav Strzhelchik as Napoleon - I thought it was tasteful, although I also love Steiger in Waterloo a LOT!!!!!

So how was the dvd transfer quality on this set?I'm itching to buy...
Seems like some bad karma around me regarding that set... but I think the seller had good ratings, so I will ask him.However at around $30 it is a good buy regardless, I think. I paid I believe $60 or so for a set of VHS tapes not too long ago.
Also, I am not sure what Patrick was watching them on - was it a regular size TV or some large screen?
On a big plasma..solarisation effect was disturbing..and only on this one.....in that magnitude!
***On a big plasma..He-he.... I know in Europe a 20" is considered BIG, but here in the land of the free, anything below 60" is not big.
I calculated the ideal size for my bedroom to be about 56", but since no one makes it, I went with 50"... for now anyways.
Another reason for staying away from the 60" monsters - I can handle the 50" all by myself - hang it on the wall, take it down, that sort of things. The 60" with its 150lb weight - forget it! It also sticks out more - I think it is 7" thick, whereas the 50 incher is only about 3.5".
Than yours..having said that I feel MUCH better....

What is your viewing distance? I watch the plasma from about 10', and to me it is just a bit too small in that case. Ideally I think 8' would be great for the 50 incher.The situation is opposite on my projector. There the screen is a tad too large for the distance, but since it is a combined audio/video system, with the left/right speakers set in critical locations with respect to the center seat, there is not much flexibility there.
I amglad I didn't order an even bigges screen, as I was initially going to. Now I have the 92" horizontal 16:9 screen.
I tend to seat at about 4 - 6 meters, it depends on the quality of the sofware, with both progressive scan in NTNC or PAL mostly good.
I was a few days a go visiting a pal who sell projectors, he had a VHS-D on demo, real cool and a huge screen, almost as good as cinema.
Maybe in my next home.....

I need time to get use to her...but I donīt know how the film was shot ( continuity ) but the last sequences were up to the job. She seems to have grown on her role.
Pierre was just right to me from the start. I just love him...and his role. He was perfect.
Andrei was a joy to look at..even without text..he could make his role sing..Both were a perfect match!
Napoleon was like Ludmilla a litlet bit of a disappointment at first and I could see literally Bondarchuk or and his photograph looking for the right angle to shoot him...His role was too thin and it did fail to grown on me like did our little sexual animal.
It is a weakness of the script I may think..I donīt remember in the book the importance Leo meant for him...but it was a no meat-role-
