One quick look at ebay tells an interesting story.Tarkovsky's version sells fast, typically for $25 or so.
Clooney? Well, not too good. Some remain unsold at $5 asking price.

Bummer for George... no one willing to shell out $5 for the "masterpiece"?
Follow Ups:
does that mean solaris (original) is 5X as good as solaris (remake)?looks like salo is 10X as good as solaris!
"HEY" - BIG A
Grand Illusion is 17 times better than Salo. There are only 15 of them on eBay, and not all Criterion, btw!
Makes you value things differently, doesn't it?
I don't know what the deal here is, as these are readily available on Amazon for $65.

Maybe there are way more Clooney dvds made than Tarkovsky's?Otherwise they're in the same league.
***Otherwise they're in the same league. You mean the DVD's? Probably. But I was talking about the films!
The original is 30 years old. Pre-dvd, pre-mass vhs era.
Didn't have recent theater play, no advertising, no promotions, no sneak previews. Of course there are fewer of them on the market. Hence higher prices...niche market.

Hi,
I have NOT seen the remake with Clooney; and I WON'T! The original was bad, I mean baaad. The book is a psychological study, a study of an apprehension slowly growing into terror, then horrible realisation.
Did I mention the book was slow paced? It's hard doing movies about states of mind. I give them credit for trying, just as I give credit to the paramedics that restarted my heart after the movie :)
I would not pay that much for ANY of Clooney films. When it hits the free cable then I will probably take a look.
BTW - your logic is off some. You say:
"Didn't have recent theater play, no advertising, no promotions, no sneak previews."
That should mean less awareness, less demand... no?
Have you checked out his work in "Three Kings", "Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou", and "Intolerable Cruelty"? I think he has matured into a fine screen actor.
A bore. But a good looking one.
Clooney is actually insulting to watch sometimes.
Mr. Clonney is a very good looking guy...Is that not enough for you?...It should.
Welcome in the 2000...
When he "acts" he makes sure everyone knows that he knows.President? No way.
There is less demand. Otherwise there'd be 100s of the original Solaris dvds on ebay...market driven economy, baby.
but their site is invaluable.
LOADS of free Russian audio and video. An idea - perhaps if we organize as a group and make a mass purchase I can go down there and negotiate a discount.
How Odessa...oh, well.
If not, Victor will make a giant buy in Moscow's Gorbushka market and ship a crate back. ;)
***If not, Victor will make a giant buy in Moscow's Gorbushka market and ship a crate back. ;)I think he will not. The idea of criss-crossing the large city in its horrible, horrible, horrible traffic in the -25 degrees cold, or rain, or snow and sleet just to save a bunch of yahoos a bunch of bucks is not high on my list.
I think I would much rather drag my ass to the Botchka and sit there over some marinaded white mushrooms and icy cold Polish vodka than spend my time negotiating best prices with some Chechens.
If you think dealing with the Brighton Beach shop keepers is any easier you got another thing comin'!
I have done my share, and that was enough. Fortunately my term was during different, better times, when you mostly had to deal with homely Jewish merchants, not the current generation of Russian and Chechen bandits in their Benz 600's. It used to be fun... twenty years ago.
