A row.
The story is about love & punishment & redemption, nothing to be excited....BUT the filming is georgeous, almost every single shot is a Rembrandt, a Spizweg, a....incredible!
The Germans were the master! No doubt their influence can be traced universally from France to the US to the United Kingdom to Italy.
Chapeau.
Follow Ups:
This is one of my all time favorite films. I watch it at least annually, and have had the pleasure of introducing many friends to it, some of whom say they "hate" silent films. Sunrise is riveting from the opening shot and never lets up, a cinematic surprise around every corner. Yes, it IS melodrama, but so well done.
Saw it as a student - it changed the way I looked at movies: plot is not all.
So who needed sound.
Died near Chicago, age 44.
