It's called "suspension of disbelief".
Follow Ups:
reality, or it's just dumb. BS seems to have been written by a 12-yr. old who doesn't seem to understand what is possible and what isn't in an adult world.
And yes---I found Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and LTR childish, as well.
It either works, you laugh, or you don't. I laughed a lot in Bad Santa. Can't remember the last movie I can say that about. If you didn't, that's life. You shouldn't conclude that the movie broke some kind of comedy rules. These rules only apply to your own taste.
comedy, including philosophers, have concluded that funny-ness has certain components. Of course, some people laugh at hangings, funerals, etc.---they find humor in the macabre, alone.
Get down offa thar!Humor in funerals, huh? . . . like Harold and Maude?
Bad Santa to me is an update of the Animal House, Caddyshack, Something About Mary formula. Grossout, can't look at it, but can't look away, like a trafic accident humor. Yes, BS goes MUCH further, but that's indicative of our times. The world we live in is grosser and more sexually explicit. Keyrist man, do you think that Paris Hilton cow could have had that show on Fox even 3 years ago? The world is moving on. Climb aboard. If you choose not to, swell. Just wave as we pull away. (we may be driving off a cultural cliff, but at least we're moving)
But don't tell me about all the ridiculous holes in the plot like BillyBob's character couldn't get it up after drinking so much. It's a MOVIE. Was Caddyshack believeable? You think Bill Murray's deviant groundskeeper would have kept that job for more than a day? Animal House's rampant liquor abuse? How could Bluto even stand up? Fear and Loathing in LV? What, you think that really happened that way? Humans CAN'T do THAT many drugs.
It's funny how some people will suspend disbelief for some character's foibles, but not others . . . I suppose some line gets crossed.
"Do you believe in life after death?" asked a boss to his employee."Yes, sir" replied the nervous employee.
"Good, because after you left early yesterday to attend your grandmother's funeral, she came in for a visit!"
however, this movie is quite over the top, even by my sleazy standards and if somebody can't stand it based on its portrayal of a dimestore Santa, I can't realy argue with that.Personally, I can't wait for the deleted scenes to come out on DVD.
