I like this film.
The actors did a good work.
It has a kind of romantic halation that I do like. it is like a cozy place. Olivier was in a bad mood ( he wanted the female lead role for his dulcinea, Vivian but she would not get it..) so he let it down on Mrs. Oberon.
It is not the perfect film but one I like too look at.
Follow Ups:
I don't have any problem with someone liking that film - it is better than many. My concern is with putting it in some sort of high pedestal, as the pinnacle of cinematographic achievement of that time.Oliver's character was, BTW, confused and confusing. He was neither a protagonist nor antogonist, more like what some Ukranian would call a piece of horse manure in the barrel - floating around without any internal control. I felt he wasn't quite sure what to make of his character, and simply acted scene by scene.
Olivier by it self, with his romantic gloom, was a good show to look at but I felt the same as you did, I was uncomfortable.
For the rest I can notbut only agree.
