And it gave me nightmares. I spent the next several years sleeping with a night light! And of course, I DO love this movie - when it came out a few years ago on Laserdisc I bought a copy. I'm with you on the digital SFX - they too often have that phony "plasticky" look, for instance the slo-mo bullets in "The Matrix".
It has all the standard pieces and it was well done. I think it is the perfect '50s SF movie. Just like "Alien" was perfect for it's time.
