He didn't shoot himself. He was holding the gun with the barrel pointed towards his chest and when NW was fighting with BDT he got knocked into and the gun went off.I agree though. The dread level was unsustainable. For me it wore away at much of what I enjoyed in the film early on.

I thought Ben and Naomi were fighting, she was pounding him with a light, and Sean tried to stop it, realizing...well, whatever....and shot himself.
Pointing the gun at himself? Whyever else would he do it but to shoot himself? He knew he was terminal, anyway...
