Today we were talking about the actors and actresses who appeared or starred in the most really great films. And second question-- what were the films? For me, it was Henry Fonda, Gregory Peck, Burt Lancaster and Jack Lemmon. Not sure if I can enumerate the films without some kind of reference though to jog the old brain. Tom Hanks has been in quite a few great films too. I also like Bogart, Peter Sellers and Alec Guiness--not sure they had the numbers though. I like Redford and Newman too, but not sure if they were in the really topnotch films, although some were very fine.
In actresses, off the top, I'd go with Audrey Hepburn. I like Deborah Kerr here too and Meryl Streep may be up there too.
What got us on to this was considering Michael Caine's oeuvre. A great actor, he has been in more than his share of dogs.
How about Jimmy Stewart? Just think of the Hitchcock films: Rope, Rear Window, Man Who Knew Too Much, Vertigo. Plus there's films like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Preminger's Anatomy of Murder, Capra's It's a Wonderful, and more.
Douglas is putting a nice long history together. He's my favorite actor so my slanted opinion is obvious.( I know, he's the same in every flick but I like it!!)DeNiro needs some props on this question too.
Tranny
...an actor that has played every role I've ever seen him in, in an exceptional manner is Robert Duvall. Victor's Depardeau (sp?) post made me think of him. No matter what the role, Duvall seems natural in it. A great actor.
.
Laughton: Island Of Lost Souls; The Private Life of Henry VIII; Les Miserables; Muntiny On The Bounty; Rembrant; Hunchback Of Notre Dame; Captain Kidd; The Canterville Ghost; Spartacus.Flynn: Captain Blood; Charge of the Light Brigade; The Adventures of Robin
Hood; The Sea Hawk; Objective Burma!; The Adventures Of Don Juan; They Died
With Their Boots On.
...I nominate Depardieu. This man is simply incredible in all his roles. Look at just the sheer number of great ones he has made - it is astonishing. Cane is also extremely prolific, but perhaps less even.I just can't think about another one who is as natural as Depardieu. Every time it seems like he didn't even have to prepare - he simply walks into the role and starts being... And even though Grant had a lot of charisma, Depardieu had redefined that word. At the first sign of him on the screen most female hearts start melting away. This while the man is "traditionally" speaking not your Carry Grant "pretty" type.
Depardieu usually doesn't call attention to himself, not like some lesser actors do so often, he simply captivates and grasps you all the way until the final credits and beyond.
Just to think how lucky we are to have that guy, who is still young and full of energy. For those unfamiliar with his art - fortunately most rental places would have many of his works, they are not too obscure in US. Just get the list off the www.imdb.com and go get them. And fall in love...
is Jack Nicholson. You see one his movies, you know who it is when
he first appears on screen, and then you forget. He somehow just
becomes the character, probably better than any actor I can think
of (except perhaps Olivier ...). His masterpiece is Chinatown, I
think. Mike
Maltese Falcon, Big Sleep, African Queen, Treasue of the Sierra
Madre, and Casablanca. Four of these made the AFI best 100 list. For actress, I have to vote for Hepburn. Cant name but 2 great
films she has been in (African Queen and Bringing Up Baby), but
she has been at least great in every film I have seen her in.And Victor's post about foreign actors/actresses cant be ignored
certainly, but I am abysmally ignorant about foreign film.
Love both of these great actors. Interestingly, no matter how good the movie is, you can't watch it too many times. Except, if it is the My Fair Lady. I must have seen it twenty times and every time I stumble over it, I stay and watch... Ditto for the "Breakfast".
...and they have actors too. Try Depardieu, Olivier, Burton, Masina, Mastroianni, Gabin, Von Sydow, Mifune, Ullmann, Cybulski... man, there are so many out there to supplement your fine list...
good call Victor.
Hooray for Depardieu! We homely-looking, hulking guys with noses that look like buttocks need an actor who doesn't look like a male model. Okay, Bogart probably works for me, too.For actresses, let's not forget Gong Li.
