The "never ending ending" was a directorial choice that effectively brought to conclusion the trilogy's story arc while closing loose character threads directly correlated in Tolkien's written works; he obviously wanted to remain as true to Tolkien's vision as was humanly possible without compromising the requirements of cinematic adaptation/storytelling. I felt that those "multiple endings" were entirely appropriate and NOT anti-climactic. IMHO, Peter Jackson managed to bring this epic to conclusion as rapidly as possible following Frodo's harrowing albeit ultimately successful sojourn. It's frustrating to see criticism surrounding the use of digital effects in this series, as if that were what LoTR is all about; granted, this film and the prior two probably couldn't have been filmed without extensive use of cutting edge CGI, but it never intruded upon the story or leaves the impression that the viewer is part of an elaborate video game. I'm still amazed that these three fims are as realistic an achievement as they are and have so effectively created the imaginary world envisioned in Tolkien's works.
I'm sorry that you were unable to overcome your prejudice, that the cinema was too loud for you and that you allowed your preconceived notions to influence your final opinion. In short, I think that YOU are utterly wrong. This film was more than "fun" for those willing to suspend disbelief, it was a truly moving experience. Obviously, YMMV, but the distance traveled may be limited by European gas prices! ;^)
Follow Ups:
Great films. Thanks goodness they weren't directed by Spielberg or George Lucas.I usually hate the films that are immensely popular (I detest the Matrix films and the current crop of Star Wars flix are pretty to look at but painfully dull, Chicago was mediocre, etc.) but I find the LOTR films exciting and entertaining.
But they aren't for those who expect instant gratification. They are slow paced because they have story and character development (so does Attack of the Clones - but it is so damned wooden that it seems to last for 14 hours). Okay, they aren't 100% Tolkein. What movie has ever been 100% true to its source material - Shakespeare (good) notwithstanding?
The ending is terrible. ( as the whole film )
Of course if you use it to fulfill the book that can make a sense ( through it won´t make a better fim out of it.) for you who did read it. I did not.
And it has a " puanteur " of recism underlying..I do not like the " people of the West " coloring...but I may be wrong on this, just my instinct telling me so, and I will not take ( !!! ) my mouth to full on this as I am really not a connaiseur in any way of the films nor the books.
My point can only be one from a cinephile. And what can I say more that it is a terrible film .
I have a taste of your passion for it, I can try to understand, but this film is just boring for me, and I am afraid your enthousiasm for it will not change my mind.
Too bad...for me.

I will bound you to a chair and let you see...part one..then maybe part two..and if your fault against me would have been terrible & horrible I would force you on part three....and one AFTER the other.
In one word it would kill you-On the other hand if I was at fault...you could do the " Solaris " trick... on me...bore me to death....
I agree, a film series of this scope would be too much for old men like yourself and Victor to view. You two would nap through the invasion of Normandy.
When?
Now, the important part: which Solaris is that?Anxiously awaiting the reply... in my war with AuPh there are no prisoners.
Never will forget that one! I can remind it vividly. It was one of the few times ever beeing shoced at something going on on the screen.
The other was in the rape scene of Bergman..." La Source " I think.
Yes, it was horrible, as was what followed it.
The only one! The other I did not want like Bambi to go through living hell... with the actor that cloned itself.
Rumor has it that Sominex is going to change it's name and rework it's marketing strategy around "Solaris" as it provides safe and natural sleep inducement without any chance of addiction. ;^)

If not us, then who?
I had to pay the full price for " Vendredi Soir " as the buggers won´t sell the to anything else as to the USA..even they do write..international...maybe Canada...Buggers!
Did you remember to divide the $$ by 1.25?Funny, isn't it, for a French to be buying the French movies from America!
Bitter! You see where we have come. The kids and the Hollywood shit.
