Daniel Auteuil gives the most civilized and acceptable Marquis de Sade filmed to date. Intelligent, sensitive, clever--not frothing, groping uncontrollably, or tearing about madly. He awaits his final disposition in a French convent turned "prison" with other nobles of his time. There, he attracts a young teen whom he eventually seduces against the background of the final days of the "Reign of Terror".The film is abundant with gorgeous locations, costumes, and sterotypical aristocratic characters. It has a genuine historical flavor and Mr. Auteuil paints a more sympathetic portrait of a man who has taken quite a beating at the hands of Hollywood in the past.

Castrated and washed out...
Can " Le Marquis " ever be civilised? Or is there another one out there?
Have you tried to read his book?
in Viet Nam. He was a sickie. (I read "120 Days of Sodom" there.) Maybe Lt. Calley's platoon read the entire collection?I do find it amusing that the French are so kind to their "own".
Of course he was not really " normal " that is the point..from that on you can not makes a normal film out of it.
For the film real thing you have to got " Paolo´s one .
Not " the French " but a part of the French film industry.
That he is NOT normal but more controlled and discriminate than usually portrayed.
I am Still saturated from the actor D. Auteuil.
For long time I really like him...
Huppert is so damned good with all the ticks and nuances she puts in her characters. I could watch her on Sesame Street, even.
