Ever since I saw this in the theater I have admired it for its story, realization, production values, sound, and cinematography. The story ends on a postive note, literally at a crossroads. Hanks is terrific throughout. It was shot six months apart, to give him time to lose all that weight.

But, the plane crash was just terrifying. I couldn't imagine it more actual. The crash in "Fearless" was of gut-wrenching caliber, also.
"Cast Away" was pretty much a "throw-away," entertaining--- but not much more.

Yeah, I loved this movie. The symbolism was a bit heavy handed, but I loved it's Zen stillness. I believe there is a 40 minutes section of the film that has no dialogue. A happy, but not pat ending. The arc of Hanks's character is gigantic. His difficulty in assimilating back into civilization is right on the $.Lots of people find this movie extremely slow, plodding and dull. While I can understand that, I think the movie captures the feeling of loneliness and desolation perfectly. People that like to be alone seem to enjoy this movie.
Hanks' favorite movie is 2001, which (like yours truly) he has seen countless times. There are a couple of obvious references to the earlier film in Cast Away, the most obvious being Hanks squatting and contemplating the newly arrived Porta-Johnny "sail", like the ape
