Yeah, I loved this movie. The symbolism was a bit heavy handed, but I loved it's Zen stillness. I believe there is a 40 minutes section of the film that has no dialogue. A happy, but not pat ending. The arc of Hanks's character is gigantic. His difficulty in assimilating back into civilization is right on the $.Lots of people find this movie extremely slow, plodding and dull. While I can understand that, I think the movie captures the feeling of loneliness and desolation perfectly. People that like to be alone seem to enjoy this movie.
Follow Ups:
Hanks' favorite movie is 2001, which (like yours truly) he has seen countless times. There are a couple of obvious references to the earlier film in Cast Away, the most obvious being Hanks squatting and contemplating the newly arrived Porta-Johnny "sail", like the ape
Moon Watcher in 2001.
