Every few years I like to see " Grand Hotel "
It is taking a voice for the " small people " a little bit as Capra did.
The film as such is not very good and Greta Garbo did over blow her role as " artist " even I knew some who were acting almost the way she describe it...
At small dose, I like to look at.
Follow Ups:
I own this on laserdisc and can't tell you how many times I started it and gave up, just not being able to get into it. But you inspire me so I will give it another shot.
for once I agree with him. "Grand Hotel" is a splendid movie. Sure, it's dated and now looks somewhat cliche BUT remember that it was filmed in 1932, when it wasn't cliche. As for Garbo, well, she made so few films AND had more screen presence and genuine charisma than any other actress of her era - except for Marlene Dietrich and until Mae West made her screen debut a year later - that one should not pass up the opportunity to watch her. Garbo is a legend for a reason - she was that good.
And who can object to Lionel and John Barrymore?!? Or Wallace Berry? Or Joan Crawford? Talk about an "A" cast, this one is about as good as it gets.
Yes, I love "Grand Hotel", creaky soap-opera plot and all. It is truly one of the classic Hollywood films.
Barrymores' performances are superb, Garbo for goodness sakes(!) and a magnetic Crawford. What more do you need? A decadent film for the ages.
Hey, I couldn't get into Citizen kane, either, and now it is one of my top three films. We all mature at different rates.
Crawford is very good..She seems playing herself.
Barrymore is superb, you are right, he must have drink just the right amount.
All in all a good show.
The worst thing that what one can do! Look a little and stop..and so on..I know from experience!
Or look at small portion of a film as to demonstrate the picture or sound quality...You ruine your pleasure for ever!
