Nothing minor about it. A pure British ensemble drama. Some may find it melodramatic, but I loved it.
Follow Ups:
Kenneth Branagh gave a very convincing performance as a drunkard.> > A pure British ensemble drama. < <
How do you feel about the Rita Rudner character? The first time I saw this I thought she was an unnecessary diversion from the others. But seeing it a second time, I could appreciate the British view of the annoying American stereotype.
Also loved the Emma Thompson "Catwoman" character, as I have a friend who used to carry pictures of her cats in costumes in her purse.
I really enjoyed the music of this film's soundtrack, chosen by Branagh, and recommend it on CD. Nina Simone's "My Baby Just Cares For Me" has audiophile quality sound, and that wonderful strolling piano.

I think she is one of the writers of the movie. From what I understand, it was originally to be played by all American actors, but it turned into something else. Her character didn't bother me, though I am not a big fan of her personally.Yes, I admit the movie is somewhat predictable and there are other ensemble dramas that are good, but there is a quality to this story and the acting by the various actors that kept me engrossed.
bores one to tears? Maybe it's me, but they all look as if they got into the prunes a bit too much. And the Ugly American prop...is that in all British movies or what?
"Friends" I thought was shallow, mediocre, predictable and largely humorless
If you want to see just how pale fare this is; compare Ken Russels "Salomes Last Dance" with Nicholas Grace, Stratford Johns and Glenda Jackson to see just how wickedly delicious British cinema can be

The Ugliest American in British cinema.
I love it too, of course, but it still a "minor" film..for me.
If you write " not " you should cary on, on the " whyīs "...
