for once I agree with him. "Grand Hotel" is a splendid movie. Sure, it's dated and now looks somewhat cliche BUT remember that it was filmed in 1932, when it wasn't cliche.As for Garbo, well, she made so few films AND had more screen presence and genuine charisma than any other actress of her era - except for Marlene Dietrich and until Mae West made her screen debut a year later - that one should not pass up the opportunity to watch her. Garbo is a legend for a reason - she was that good.
And who can object to Lionel and John Barrymore?!? Or Wallace Berry? Or Joan Crawford? Talk about an "A" cast, this one is about as good as it gets.
Yes, I love "Grand Hotel", creaky soap-opera plot and all. It is truly one of the classic Hollywood films.
