I think she is one of the writers of the movie. From what I understand, it was originally to be played by all American actors, but it turned into something else. Her character didn't bother me, though I am not a big fan of her personally.

Yes, I admit the movie is somewhat predictable and there are other ensemble dramas that are good, but there is a quality to this story and the acting by the various actors that kept me engrossed.
