Watched Hitchcock's Psycho once again last night. Norman Bates sure stutters a lot at significant moments, like when he's trying to explain to Marion where the motel room's bathroom and shower are.Can anyone here think of some other stuttering film villains? Does the stutter disclose anything about the character? What does it disclose? Anyone know how stuttering was perceived at the Hitchock made the film?
Wierd question, I know; bear with me.
Not sure that one qualifies.
the stuttering was actually Anthony Perkins idea. (watch "the making of" if you get a chance) The stutter adds texture to the character. It does about as much as anything else to give his character backstory.
not another Edward Gein fan
What gave you this impression? : )
sorry for the indictment, but it's been my experience that this it's not a stretch. It's a baby step. Talk about a sad state of affairs.
I didn't know that. Thanks. I notice that he stutters on the word "falsity" when he tells Marion that birds actually eat quite a lot (he'd observed before that she eats like a bird). I've always wondered if he wasn't about to say "fallacy" instead, which is the kind of word Norman might find disturbing, since it sounds like "phallus."
