I was expecting more. What was all the fuzz about?I felt the director didn't know where to stop to make it interesting, and simply went too much into his personal indulgence, losing and irritating the viewer in process. That made the characters too shallow, like after the steamroller. They would have more life and points of interest had he stopped a few steps from declaring the oh-too-obvious.
Subtlety apparently not in his locution at the time.
Would I rent something like that? No way. But catching it on a free channel is whole lot better than perhaps 99% of what's typically there.
The director Neil LaBute's next film, Your Friends and Neighbors had certainly more life to it... plus it had Catherine Keener, for whom I have a soft spot.
Follow Ups:
cruelty was horrendous. Considering the title, the director may have been trying to make a statement about the current state of the war between the sexes. No quarter, indeed.
When you overbuild, the poignancy disappears. He should have done it more gently, then the effect would be stronger. But that was his first, I believe, film.Ditto for the war of sexes - it is grossly overstated. I think the sexes exist in a much better harmony today... except is few tilted minds. Therefore the main thrust of the film will leave some (most?) viewers puzzled - it is unreal.
Grotesque is tricky thing, it needs to be done very tastefully.
But all in all, here's a movie that makes you think a bit.
on a late night show that his role apparently made a strong impression on women as a woman in NYC walked up to him on the street and slapped his face then stormed off.
Yes, I have heard something along those lines. But in reality the film is a parody, it is way too grotesque to be anything but.
