It's a tough one.
Most remakes are either a way to cash in on the cult status of the originals[like King Kong or Psycho] or a cheap way of making films that proven to be successful overseas but are unknown here[script needs to be reworked a little bit, the original is already there as a production guide; voila.] Whoever came up with the idea was a financial genius.

Those horrible remakes of Pierre Richard films are a "good" example.
