...is the Spanish film by Fernando León de Aranoa, about a bunch of unemployed former shipyard workers. In some sense it continues the theme of Man Without a Past - of simple people thrown into difficult circumstances and their coping with it.
Inspite of being depressing, the film is uplifting, probably due to its soft treatment and obvious humanistic underlining.
Several very good performances - most notably by Javier Bardem, and... perhaps the second award should go to Nieve de Medina - she is remarkable.
I am sure some would find it boring - more guys sitting at the bar, not saying much at all. Such is often the truth - most of the time it doesn't call much attention to itself.

Isnīt life interesting? For those people, by your definition, are really lumpen..., arenīt they?Regards
BF
Lumpen has nothing to do with the social class position - it is the attitude, the mind set. As such, only the main character has the lumpen traits in him.I looked up the other two films - they are not present here in the US... perhaps considered beneath our level of perfection... if I spot them on ebay I will get them.
Any ideas on Between your Legs? I think I am going for broke - I am gonna rent it tonight, dog house or no dog house!
...is not so good: kind of a flic with an erotic load. It got rave reviews from a gay forum...Regards
But I think I will take my chance. I will water it down with the film for which Kurosawa wrote the script right before his death - don't recall the title now, but it is there on the shelf, waiting to be picked.
Please report, as it looks very interesting. If you havenīt seen it, in "After the Rain" (1999) thereīs some nice talking about fine swords...
Regards
Will definitely report. But no dog house yet - someone rented Between Your Legs.
Oh, the torture of waiting!
Got another Finnish film - Cucoo. About the female sniper during the WWII.
You should watch it. I saw this movie in Spain in 98 while traveling there. I did not know anything about the director but I have been looking for his movies in the States. Very promising career. The only one in DVD is "La Gran Vida" which is not one of his best.

Americans are sitting around bars now, thanks to W, having such ennobling experiences. Some of them even may be, like the Finns in "Past," actually enjoying the romance and comradeship of lean-to living.
The compassion, the compassion....
You live in Amuhrica now.
Can't say I enjoyed it much, though.
Or the film? Hehe, The guy playing Jaeger is quite good, in the first scenes in the desert ( It MUST have have start there my love with...) had some good atmosphere, then it turn out to be long and for collegians made.
Yes, Sam is nice, as are couple of other guys, but as a whole the movie is simply atrocious. It's got all the prints of the ridiculous made-for-American-TV docu-drama. I am a sucker for the air/space stuff, and I enjoyed it for the bits of trivia and facts, but man, as a film it is so far below par it is ridiculous. You take a great true story and throw it in a barrel together with an incredibly weak script, add some good performances, some not so good ones, put there an awful directing, and soak everything in heavy maple syrup - and then you've got it.You probably don't watch many of the made-for-tv drame thingies, but they have developed a particular style, all the same for every such "film", all based on true stories and all seem like they were made on the same conveyor belt.
But when you take The Right Stuff for what it truly is, it is enjoyable.
-----> but man, as a film it is so far below par it is ridiculous <-----You forgot to add "In my opinion."
An opinion, no matter how popularly held, is not a fact.
Incidentally, I think most BAT gear sucks, but just my opinion, not a fact.
Yo yo, WE understand that what we says is " only " in our opinions, we do not need to carry a sign to know that. There is no trace of absolutism here, and if, only in your mind.
Must you be rude?
Are you a shy boy ?
Quite right PatU... I am not rude, that post must have been from my evil twin.Nurse........ MEDS!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for your indulgence.

For two hours, to watch the Rules of the Game on the large screen - those Criterions look gorgeous that way.No Amontillado, but have good Port.
Shall report later.
A good vintage Port, is what I will indulge myself tonight..But still have made no choice on what to vision tonight.
Bon plaisir!
PS: This morning after waking up I tought of Renoirīs " The Rules..." and I found a mistake in is view of the society of the bourgoisie at the time.
It seems that is had the idea that ( what was right then and still is today ) than the upperclass tend to protect themself ( noblesse & bourgoiesie) beyond the fact of religion ( in this case being Jewish )
But it was not the case as 1939 told us the lection.
You see my point?
Did you have the disc set where Renoir himself made an introduction? That was interesting too. Please clarify your point... I am off to view the second DVD.
You know, me and documentary on films...Yes I have the " Criterion " I will have the entire look at somewhere later.I meant that Renoir in the film, show us that the uper class was able to protect itself..Remember " it was an accident...That the way they could handle the situation, beetwen people of wealth and " good compagny " and well borned.
They even accept a Jew ( money ) ( long scene with the cook ) So Renoir tell us that beeing in this class is " protective ".
But he failed to mention ( 1939 ) that the Nazi would not take any consideration..
In all europe it was of common knowledge that the noble without a penny married some rich Jews, to have the ressource they needed.
Money did justify the " mesalliance " due to anti-semitisme.
I just orderd " Brideshead Revised " Did you see it ?
No, haven't seen it, but used to love his novels... even stole a book from my firm's library. Is that the TV mini series? Let me know how you like it, it is pricey at $43 here.
I paid Eu55. Yes the English mini TV series. It has very good critics. And a pleiade of great actors! I will let you know, of course!
I am reading the second bio of Sir Alec Guiness, what a time! I wish I could have lived there. It is more interesting that a criminal story.
I'm not sure if I spelled his name correctly but he plays the test pilot.
