fat divan and get down to your multiplex: you don't think wishing will get you better movies, do you?
"Monster," "The Girl with the Pearl Earring," "The Cooler," and several other movies all worth seeing are around----with many other interesting ones soon scheduled for wide release.
Sometimes this forum reminds me of the nursing home I worked in during my first year of college--all the old guys and gals sitting around grousing about how the world had gone to hell---music, film, painting, automobiles, politics....all sucked compared to the "old days."
Day by day, the synapses fire less and less, until one day...
Follow Ups:
I believe some people have very specific tastes in movies. That is the reason we are here. A few days ago there was a discussion about the Lord of the Rings and soem people were trashing the trilogy. I loved the movies and I responded on those lines. In the other hand I had enjoyed many movies that Victor, et. al mentioned. I enjoy the healthy discussion of taste which is what we do here. Otherwise we would just watch what the USA Today rcommends (AA members outside the US please make a substitution) It is like music. Mariah Carey is the singer with the best sales. That does not make her better.
So, arriba la diferencia! enjoy the discussion.......... So, Victor, How many movies do you watch a week, average?
Ruben
Probably 10 or so a week. Mostly what I can find on cable TV. Probably just 2 to 4 rentals or purchased ones a week on average. So perhaps 80% of what I see are American movies... naturally...
...when for $3.75 you can have a masterpiece? My rental shop has more great films than I will be able to see in my remaining life. And you want me to sit on a Coke-soaked seat, getting my feet stuck to chewing gum, with someone talking and burping behind me?
I much prefer the company of my wife and dog... thank you.
Those films will eventually make it to the free cable, then I will give them a chance.
In most cases it turns out waiting for a year or so is usually not a big loss. I think I waited two years to see Being John Malkovich... what did I lose besides the $30?
you can see the matinee, usually free from annoying neighbors and dirt, for much less than $30---it's $5.75 here. I bring my own snacks...
By your reasoning, NO one would ever listen to anything new because it hadn't been annointed by the cognoscenti as "great."
Your standards certainly are lower than mine if you think there are that many great movies in the past...
Kind of reminds me of a friend who refuses to attend any plays except those of "The Bard."
"No one's as good," he says...
The $30 figure was inclusive of parking, gas and snacks... the matinee's here at Ritz (the only good theater in Phily) is $6.50 I believe. But the multiplexes? I forgot when was the last time I paid to see a Hollywood film... this is a philosophical concept - I vote with my bucks, and I don't want them go to George Cloonies of the world.
But as I said, there is severe shortage of available time on my part, more than money, to see all the good ones. And if one of the recent major releases IS good, I WILL catch it eventually, but the point is - I will not be simply sitting waiting for it, I will be watching something nice in the meantime.
Last time I went to the store, my head spun... I can watch two rented ones on a weekend day - no travel, and just $7.50 total.
Are my standards lower? Even if they are, I am not so concerned with that. I am just plowing my own swatch. You are welcome to do yours.
