In Reply to: Why should anyone - not just movie snobs - waste $30 or so on a so-so film... posted by Victor Khomenko on February 08, 2004 at 18:47:37:
you can see the matinee, usually free from annoying neighbors and dirt, for much less than $30---it's $5.75 here. I bring my own snacks...
By your reasoning, NO one would ever listen to anything new because it hadn't been annointed by the cognoscenti as "great."
Your standards certainly are lower than mine if you think there are that many great movies in the past...
Kind of reminds me of a friend who refuses to attend any plays except those of "The Bard."
"No one's as good," he says...
Follow Ups:
The $30 figure was inclusive of parking, gas and snacks... the matinee's here at Ritz (the only good theater in Phily) is $6.50 I believe. But the multiplexes? I forgot when was the last time I paid to see a Hollywood film... this is a philosophical concept - I vote with my bucks, and I don't want them go to George Cloonies of the world.
But as I said, there is severe shortage of available time on my part, more than money, to see all the good ones. And if one of the recent major releases IS good, I WILL catch it eventually, but the point is - I will not be simply sitting waiting for it, I will be watching something nice in the meantime.
Last time I went to the store, my head spun... I can watch two rented ones on a weekend day - no travel, and just $7.50 total.
Are my standards lower? Even if they are, I am not so concerned with that. I am just plowing my own swatch. You are welcome to do yours.
